Press Release
Omaha-based sculptor Randy Covey casts smoothed, iconic sculptures that emerge from prolonged aesthetic investigations and often difficult personal introspection. The resulting forms are abstract expressionist shapes that speak both of personal stories and universal experiences. Some of his sculptures evoke the minimalist works of Constantin Brancusi, though Covey is similarly wary of creating pieces which are too clearly figurative. Instead, each sculpture portrays a dynamism and an impression of movement that resonates unmistakably with viewers without pinning their interpretation to a single possibility. Seen from different sides and angles, and in different lighting, each sculpture has the uncanny capacity of evoking radically different reactions.
Throughout, Covey uses a variety of metals (bronze, copper and silver, among others), and favors long, winding, swooping forms over solid masses. Each artwork thereby takes on strong emotional resonances, with recurring motifs like flames, wind, water and cyclical patterns suggesting a fundamentally harmonious and vibrant aesthetic sensibility. This blend of shining energy and brilliance with calm minimalism makes Covey’s sculptures beautifully rich and intriguing.
Artist Statement
My passion is compounded as I demonstrate my feelings and thoughts through each of my creations. I create each piece in hopes that the “eye of the beholder” sees and feels my passion for each creation. My creations are unusual. I don’t know how each piece will end up until its completion as it goes through the “creation” cycle. Beginning as drawings on paper, to wax to casting done personally for my metal creations. Each piece comes to life when completed – reflecting light, depth and character. I am inclined to use straight and curved lines. I use reflections as a way to interact with the environment. My wish is that each person who views one of my creations – feels. I aspire for each person to feel the passion I possess as I create.
