Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

R. John Ferguson is an award-winning photographer with a variety of interests that capture the surreal echoes in our world. Within his body of work we can find landscapes featuring divine moments of interplay between light, mist, and natural forms, as well as majestic figural studies. Each 35mm film photograph is finely crafted with attention to lighting, clarity, and cropping. Ferguson allows the unexpected to influence the picture, as nature puts its fingerprint on his work in the form of halos of light, craggy tree limbs, or drifting snow and cloud formations. Through these creative visualizations Ferguson seeks to connect on a deep level with audiences in a timeless fashion. "My photography is based on inspirations from the beauty that surrounds us," he explains. "I want my art and my visions to be not only seen but experienced by the viewers of today and the viewers of tomorrow."

Ferguson continues to create and exhibit his photography, and he has attracted acclaim from other influential artists. He lives and works in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Artist Statement

My mind envisions a moment in time and I then pursue the task of creating and capturing the moment. I find trees to be fascinating studies, and snow yields numerous visions, yet a strong influence on my work comes from a completely different source; I find in Weston's images of Charis a subtle yet vibrant capture of more than an image. Weston's Charis images leave the viewer of today feeling as if you are part of the photo opportunity. With the inspiration I find in these images I attempt to capture memorable images of dancers and the female form. I want to draw attention to beauty which is too often overlooked.
