Piero Manrique

The Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition
August 24 - September 12, 2012 Reception: Thursday August 30, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

Piero Manrique's unique, otherworldly artwork has been inspired by his past studies in design, dance, the martial arts, architecture and sculpture. His distinctive personal vision goes beyond surrealism to a realm which speaks to us on a level concerned as much with the past as with the future. Part collage, part portraits of futuristic jungles, these are alien dreamscapes, to be sure, but they do not keep us at arm's length. The human body holds a central place in his vision, and he invites us to see not only the splendor of an imagined future, but also challenges us to appreciate the human body in juxtaposition to imagined technology, as an instrument ready to evolve into the next stage of meaning, and beauty.

With his highly original and challenging work, Piero Manrique offers the viewer works in which the very notions of art, beauty, and what it means to be human, are being redefined.

Artist Statement

For me, painting is like breathing, it keeps me alive. I rely upon a higher power to feed my inspiration and fill my work with the joy of creation. My paintings naturally evolve and never repeat. It is important to me to always put positive energy into my paintings. It is my wish to inspire the creativity of the viewers of my paintings.

I was born in Peru, and am still inspired by the rich diversity of colors and concepts that make up Peruvian culture. I came to the U.S. at 13, unable to speak English, and for a while my best form of expression was my art. In many ways, it continues to be that, because of the way it allows me to combine my background in architecture and dance with all of my other life experiences, creating a complex, layered whole.

My new series of paintings, “Transformations,” are created by pouring a variety of paint types with water. Then, using minor brushstrokes and the touch of my fingers, I allow the paint to flow and interact. Much of the beauty of these works results from the paints’ responses to each other as they dry.
