Peter Baldinger’s acrylic and oil paintings explore the gap between realism and abstraction. Baldinger’s work depicts human forms on the edge of individuality and anonymity. Baldinger creates a pixilated effect on canvas, which reveals both an abstract composition of square shaped fields and an “image” that can only be realized when seen from a great distance. The pixilated effect works in tandem with Baldingers’s ideas about the digital age and creates an awareness of how the age of technology has shaped human interaction and “blurred” individualism.

Peter Baldinger lives and works in Vienna, Austria.

Artist Statement

Right from the start, my work as an artist has revolved round the problem of the inflationary production of images in the age of information, and possible alternatives to it. The explosion of available information during modern times escalated even more with the start of the digital age, yet we are sufficiently aware that this has not necessarily led to better or increasingly authentic information in all areas. In my portrait-series I try to find ways to depict people on the edge between individuality and anonymity. The unidentified-paintings show realistic portrayal of the backs of heads, the diffusion-paintings show people seen through corrugated glass and create a new truth of an individual observation, and the low resolution-paintings take portrait photos resolved into a small number of painted large pixels. This combines the distinct with the unidentifiable. So from another view, my art walks on the boarder between realism and abstraction.
