Press Release
Ablaze with color, Pat Fairhead paints cascading images of light and mystery, creating large, sweeping watercolor paintings that are at once elemental and abstract. Choppy white splatters of paint arc in linear explosions across Fairhead’s atmospheric references to the forces of wind & weather, falling water, storm & thunder and quiet depths, discovering strength in the structures and cycles of nature. Bringing together great texture and depth, on a larger scale than one expects to find in a watercolor, the artist pushes the boundaries of her medium, finding inspiration in the intensity of her creative process.
Born in Yorkshire, England, Pat Fairhead came to Canada as a child and quickly fell in love with the country’s untamed wilderness, locating her studio in the scenic and secluded beauty of Muskoka, Ontario. An active and adventurous spirit, she is a dedicated outdoorswoman and world traveller, exhibits extensively throughout both Great Britain and Canada and is featured in the Royal Collection of Prints and Drawings at Windsor Castle.
Pat has had 70 solo shows internationally and is represented in 300 corporate and private collections.
Artist Statement
I am a Painter, all the time. My goal is to paint light so that it is both exciting and mysterious; ice, fire, water, thunder, roaring sea. In my current work, “WATER,” I continue my lifelong fascination with the light, energy, color and mood on and in water, of cascades and still depths, always looking for another river, lake, stream, ocean, waterfall or spring, from wind-driven rain to snow. I get an intense thrill out of painting big. I work in watercolor, oil, acrylic, and some print-making, choosing the medium that best expresses my newest series. I am known for my color, and currently I am working with ‘color-saturated’ watercolor, which I love for its transparency, intensity, surprising chemical reactions, clarity and excitement. I’m constantly on the edge of discovery, flirting with disaster – and I usually pull it off! I want to express my personal experience of inspiration, and touch the viewer.
