Press Release

A versatile painter, Paco Dalmau’s consummate draftsmanship gives strength and vitality to the figures and often surreal settings of his paintings.  Dalmau’s work seeks to explore the human psyche – his own and those that surround him.  The tension between this internal, deeply reflective world and the externalities of others manifests on the canvas.  Dalmau approaches each painting individually, laying down brushstrokes as the work demands.  Long, lean strokes of oil paint are juxtaposed with chaotic spatters, bold impasto figures emerge from smooth, luminous backgrounds, or seem to melt into a hazy world where nothing is certain.  His mature handling of color creates an atmosphere charged with emotion.  Employing a restrained yet vibrant range, intense color breaks through the surface of his canvases. Dalmau’s enquiring and empathic works encapsulate the energy and unbridled passion with which he creates them.

Born in Spain in 1978, Paco Dalmau’s early talent was refined by his artistic training in Barcelona.  Currently living and working in Vila-Real, Dalmau continues to explore and develop his practice.

Artist Statement

I consider myself an admirer of authors such as Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, David Hockney taught me to paint every day, the silences of minimal art, and large patches of color by Mark Rothko provided my work the necessary to locate the air for my figures, the energy of Pollock and De Kooning lead me to believe that chaos can build an excellent piece. Color has a major role in my painting, I believe that hard work with color gives the piece its aesthetic quality and recounts the feelings that we want to translate that piece. The choice of materials formats and technique is always closely linked to the purpose for which the new work was born, I am always looking for ways to get the result I have in mind.
