In the enigmatic layers of Italian photographer Norma Picciotto’s art one finds a dreamy landscape of the soul, a cryptic reality built on fragmented glances of the classical and the contemporary. Steeped in the spirituality, history, and culture of the Sephardic merchants who once traveled throughout the Mediterranean, Northern Africa, and the near East, Picciotto’s heritage provides a wealth of inspiration for her art. Ancient Jewish texts and portraits of herself drawn from the artist's family albums are illuminated within gleaming bubble-like spheres, their eyes and faces silently speaking volumes with poignancy and grace. Picciotto’s digital creations are presented as limited edition photographic prints on acrylic kristalrec. The large scale format gives her works a quiet power, drawing viewers deep into her worlds.
Born in Milan where she still lives and works, Norma Picciotto began her career in journalism, helping to found the DeBellis Agency of photojournalism. At the agency's close in 2000 she shifted her focus to fine art, traveling worldwide to gather imagery for her works.
