Nick Kozak

The 2010 Chelsea International Fine Art Competition Exhibition
August 17 - September 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday August 19, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

In the creation of mixed-media sculptures, New York artist Nick Kozak explores the mathematical union of materials using the most common and unnatural things that surround us. His interest lies in the synchronization of everyday objects, the reconfiguration of the sublime into something majestic and harmonious. As these seemingly meaningless objects are collected, arranged, and transformed into sculpture, he instills them with a second life, one of beauty and quiet contemplation. As he explains, through this process “the object is enlightened from repetition, like Buddhist monks chanting mantra and finding solace in the selfless echo.”

Artist Statement

It’s been my experience that the most common things penetrate me at the deepest level. I’ve found myself several times in a grocery store, gazing at the immaculately placed products organized on the shelves. So constant, so synchronized. The mass production of objects ensures their uniformity, which is almost sublime, like plant cells under a microscope neatly stacked up like bricks. There is power in numbers. The careful placement of simple objects can transform them into a real entity that is majestic and harmonious. My objects are enlightened from repetition, like Buddhist monks chanting mantra and finding solace in the selfless echo.
