Press Release
Franco-Spanish artist Nataixa Ros worked in Paris and Madrid fashion houses for years before moving to Barcelona and devoting her life to painting. The acute sensitivity of the designer to the shape and proportions of the female form continue to serve her well, particularly in a recent series of ballerina portraits. She eschews the unspecific and stylized imagery of fashion illustrations for an arresting aesthetic that, as she acknowledges, draws on the work of the late Lucian Freud.
Appearing against dramatic black backdrops with the occasional suggestion of a dance studio setting — a railing, a reflective floor — Ros’s dancers are weightless, powerful, elegant and transcendent all at once. Her beautifully applied oil paints portray perfect physiques and attest to the artist’s near-scientific knowledge of anatomy. And yet the dancers’ muscles flex, while their joints are visible as they move. Though capable of unparalleled beauty and elegance, Ros’ powerful portrayal of these ballerina bodies reminds us of the realities of movement as well as its capacity for inducing wonder.
Artist Statement
All my life is an artistic project. Art has been a vital part of my life ever since I was born, playing an important role in my parents’ lives and so in my family life growing up. My father’s commitment to his successful musical career still inspires me, though my own talents have taken me in the direction of visual art. I started painting originally with acrylics, but now my favourite technique is using oil paints. I want to become a great painter and always be able to make painting the cornerstone of my existence. It's my whole life, and my inspiration for my work comes from life itself.
