The paintings of Michael W. O’Malley are an intensely personal journey of discovery through which he has gained the freedom to create works of pure light, color and energy. Inspired by the simple beauty of apple orchards, O’Malley brings into play masterful brushwork and a delicately toned mosaic of pastel shades, creating subtle changes in form and color. The artist constructs a parallel universe glowing with vitality and light out of the theme of apple orchards by drawing on his passionate striving for simplicity. He reduces his subject matter to densities of soft pinks and lime greens reminiscent of the pink-tinged white leaves of apple trees flowering in spring. He organizes the visual space of the canvas confidently – form and solid masses emerge from areas of color and the theme becomes sublimated through stylization. The gradations of tone and harmony of nuances become a form of alchemy, whereby the humble apple is transformed into painterly surfaces that glow with a soft luster of light and color and are a joy to contemplate. O’Malley constantly works and develops his subject matter until he is satisfied with the results. In the words of the artist “Pursuit represents what you are and every painting represents the potential of who you can be”.
