Contemporary German Art: The New York Experience
March 23 - April 13, 2010 Reception: Thursday March 25, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Michael B. Sky crafts paintings that are nothing short of extraordinary. Whether photorealistic landscapes or magnificent portraiture, each work is created with the utmost care and attention to detail. Rapture is a unifying theme within Sky’s oeuvre, which he discovers in grand cloud formations, a striking face, or the erratic contours of a well-worn floor. His dreams and subconscious are also a continual source of inspiration; life is the great mystery that he is exploring through his visionary art. "This creative ritual is the source of the eternal quest for self-knowledge," he states. Working with oil or mixed media on canvas, Sky’s treatment of vastly different subjects often suggests very similar feelings. Whether a beautiful recumbent nude lost in thought or heavenly beams of sunlight cast through sinister clouds, both become catalysts for passionate reverie. A limited palette of analogous colors with severe variations in tone further enhances the dramatic appeal of his work.

Sky’s paintings are held in private collections throughout Europe. He lives and works in Herne, Germany.

Artist Statement

My art is not determined by a specific style or technique and my artistic development is still evolving. My paintings reflect my inspiration and view of the world and my visual impressions emerging from dreams and experiences that melt into real and unreal images. The subject allows me to explain myself to the world, to express what I perceive and wish to communicate, it reveals the elusive part of my spirit and deep parts of the unconscious. Art is my source of the quest for self-knowledge and calls attention to what intrigues me: to discover a world of forms and colors in the phenomena and to make them visible in order to excite imagination.
