Press Release
Italian artist, Maurizio Bassi has an infectious enthusiasm that directly channels into his abstract paintings. Coming to abstraction purely through his own processes rather than through study of previous artists, Bassi’s style retains a fluidity that allows him to express himself freely as the mood or train of thought dictates. Although he predominantly uses bright primary colors, these can be spattered, poured or flicked onto the surfaces, they can form complex lattices of spidery lines or wide brushstrokes can traverse the paintings creating pieces full of nervous energy. The paintings are also diverse in their material surfaces. Bassi uses wood and linen as his bases, mixing materials and experimenting as the compositions progress.
He paints for the pleasure and the expression of painting and the process of creating. If on standing back from a painting he had previously considered complete, Bassi finds himself unconvinced by it, he will start again to layer the painting and work into its surface, building until he is satisfied.
Artist Statement
I have no idea how I came to choose abstract art, I only recall that anything that all the things I saw around me gave me the inspiration to create my works. I originally used wooden spatulas to spread the paint, or smashed it with the brush, but now use anything I find. My first works used tempera, but more recently I have switched to using enamel. I always start with an idea in my mind but many times during the course of the work I have changed and ended up with another thing. I can say that I am a self-taught artist, I have not attended artistic schools but I have always had a passion for design. In time I discovered artists like Warhol and Pollock, realizing the similarities between my work and theirs. Warhol in particular fascinates me, adding another layer of interest to my art.
