Maricela Sanchez creates brilliantly colored and densely layered abstract collages that speak to the complex relationship that we have with nature and to each other. Working with oil paint and mixed media on wood, the dazzling and symbolic palette influenced by the artist’s coastal living instantly commands your attention. Sanchez plunders a rich cultural trove of environmental imagery, product advertisements, and news articles which she incorporates surreptitiously into her work. Sensitive to the shape and form of her canvas, Sanchez cuts her own individual shapes out of wood to use for her ground. Some compositional shapes are wildly amorphous, like a glistening Rorschach test with hints of Jean Arp. Thematically Sanchez examines the universal concerns of identity, nature, and major life events. With an elegant, deceptive simplicity her art acts as a metaphor for examining ourselves and the world around us.
Having left a successful career in non-profit fundraising to pursue her art full-time, Maricela Sanchez has been pouring her efforts into creating and exhibiting around the country. She lives and works in Corpus Christi, Texas.
