Like the German expressionists who inspired her, Marialuisa Sabato's work develops on an instinctual level, and communicates to the viewer in its own unique language. Yet her paintings are also clearly Italian-influenced as well, as they vividly express a love of color and the interaction of tones which make up the powerful composition of these works. Marialuisa reveals her exuberance for sensory details, as well as her skill at capturing the visual ecstasy of nature, specifically the worlds of flowers and the sea. She often frames her vivid subject matter in rich, dark colors, or engages in other visual layering to create a complex variety of moods. Her bands of color fill her canvases with life, as painterly backgrounds support the detailing she devotes to floral and ocean life.
The feelings which the pieces inspire range from the contemplative to the joyfully exuberant, but a consistent element is the complexity of Marialuisa's composition, and the sensitive way in which she presents her beloved subject matter.
