With a flair for the nostalgic, María José Alba creates visions of a time gone by. The colorfully quirky culture of the 1940s and 50s comes alive with a vibrant enthusiasm through Alba’s works, giving an impression of the confidence and zest of the United States’ post war years. In these graphically bold paintings, inspired by Pop Art and Americana, one finds poised curves of retro pinup models and classic cars, legends of jazz, and roadside attractions from New York City or the dusty west. A self-taught artist from an early age, Alba’s use of oil paints on canvas and wood is skillfully crisp, filling her forms with a smooth and vivid warmth. "Painting for me is the highest expression of feelings, thoughts and moods, the clearest way to show the world just what I am, and I try to reflect in my works," explains the artist.
Born and currently living in Spain, María José Alba traveled widely throughout the U.S., bringing the country’s influences home through her art in exhibits throughout Europe.
