Press Release
Award-winning Argentinean artist María Inés Cámara crafts awe-inspiring paintings that represent a ballet of motion, activity, and imagination. A recurring motif is the colorful flowing ribbons that zoom, dip and curl around the canvas, threading the composition together. Her creative approach employs unusual visual trickery and trompe l'oeil, with certain shapes appearing as fabric or other material that seems to lift off the surface in layers. Cámara’s paintings are delightful to explore. In this surreal realm there are extraordinary events being played out. Shapes that recall sailboats and birds in flight soar across the luminous sky and celestial forces gather under a watchful omnipotent eye. Throughout her body of work, we get the sense that the artist is having as much fun as we are; the act of creation is playful and provides endless possibilities. “My work explores the shapes, images, and colors of my own internal space,” she explains, “and communicates possibilities of other subtler worlds.”
María Inés Cámara has exhibited her work internationally and she lives in Buenos Aires.
Artist Statement
My work explores the shapes, images, and colors of my own internal space, and communicates possibilities of other, subtler worlds. I generally resolve my work in metaphysical spaces. My latest series deals with the fall of paradigms and the rise of a new planetary awareness, and employs what I call object/sculpture as well as painting. I am influenced by the graphic representations of the Patagonian cave paintings, and more generally by the indigenous cultures of my land and how the native art adapts to everyday life. My work shows my beliefs and personal views. I use acrylic paint that allows me to make hue variations, watercolor washes and sweeps. Watercolor enriches my palette. The result reflects my inner world.
