Color is the impetus in Marga Duin's abstract paintings. Incessant in her search for dramatic color relationships and inventive compositions, Duin juxtaposes flat planes of color with tumultuous brushstrokes and tenuous, airy washes of blue. Working from her seaside studio in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, she reaps continual inspiration from the waves, the beach and the capricious weather. Even in her abstract work, the influence of the coastal landscape is evident - like water, air and earth, the contrasting textures and forms in each painting inform a rich and complex configuration of space. Geometric shapes cluster and unfold in cubistic arrangements, while the surrounding space dissolves into vast expanses of diffused light and soft, immaterial gradations of bright color. Each plane of color, she says, has a distinct tone and reveals a different emotion. Duin's process is intuitive, and results in abstract images that "express the deepest and most fundamental emotions which make up human relationships."
