Marcia Feller

The Portal of Tranquility
May 18 - June 7, 2012 Reception: Thursday May 24, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

Marcia Feller’s sun-filled landscapes are linked inextricably with her waterfront Maine studio — as she says, “My Stonington/Maine Coast paintings represent my soul.” Yet the imagery is so richly imagined that it evokes a whole host of environments and experiences for any viewer. Rooftops glisten with three shades of pastel light; stones at water’s edge reflect fragile ripples; flowerbeds roll along a hillside that could be in Monte Carlo or Mendocino. Feller’s magic is in her palette, which can conjure the boundless, subtle glow of a morning sky or the fluid colors of a port at rush hour. Her treatment of light recalls the Impressionists in their most delicate moments.

Feller works in a variety of media, including acrylic, pastel, and encaustic, and some of her works are made into giclée prints. Though her landscapes come nominally from life, her method allows for a sort of breathing, evolving canvas: an empty hill one day might contain an entire village the next. “I like the journey of a painting,” she explains. “It takes on its own life.” Feller lives on Cousins Island, ME.

Artist Statement

I always enjoy the journey of a painting, the way it takes on its own life. I have been inspired by wonderful teachers, and by my muse – the Maine Coast. My Stonington/Maine Coast paintings represent my soul, but I respond to moments in time. Several years ago I found a photo of my husband reading The Night Before Christmas to his two young children. It reminded me of a Mary Cassatt painting so I decided to attempt it. I had never painted portraits before, but the moment was so precious... I was drawn in. That is the beauty of art: the sun hitting a surface, water reflecting autumn trees around the lake, a couple sitting outside an Italian restaurant... Each evokes the urge, the call - the need to paint. How lucky we are to be able to interpret the impression of a moment and share it with others over time.
