Madeleine Arnett

The Rhythm of Color
September 13 - October 4, 2011 Reception: Thursday September 15, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

The vibrant works of Canadian artist Madeleine Arnett are filled with liquid light and energy. Exploring the nature of fluidity, Arnett paints images of river rocks and water, giving these elements a wonderfully expressive feel through her swirling mixes of fluid and brilliant color.  As she alternates styles, techniques, and tools, in her dynamic painting process, each work is both inventive and communicative, inviting us to consider the nature of water in new ways.

For Arnett, the river has become her muse; it is her fascination with water that propels her artistic drive. Using a lively color palette, compositionally each painting is balanced yet dynamic, conveying a sense of fluidity and timelessness through curved lines and elemental forms. Her use of light not only helps elucidate the transparent and elusive nature of water, but creates elements of reflection and refraction that add an entirely new dimension to her subject. What results are intricate patterns of curving, rippling light that remind us of the harmony and energy that water inevitably holds.

Artist Statement

Textured rocks form intricate patterns and seem to liquefy in the clear waters of my acrylic “River Rock” series. My fascination with water has fueled my artistic drive. I love to paint its transparency, its energy and its distortion. The water becomes a kaleidoscope and rocks naturally morph into dazzling abstraction. I paint in an energetic style, trading brushes for palette knives and color pushers to capture the synergy of the flowing water, the dancing light and the jewel-like colors of the wet rocks. By careful use of color, I add harmony and balance to the chaos of detail in the riverbed. We all feel naturally drawn to water and my “River Rock” paintings evoke this emotional and sensual response, being an intimate reaction to land and rivers; not as distant vistas, but as seen up close, close enough to step into the rejuvenating water and draw on its life-giving energy.
