Press Release
Though born in a small town in Russia, Lola Lonli’s works draw upon a broad worldview, referencing the epic mythology and legends of many widespread cultures. As she builds her folkloric imagery with tightly packed details, Lonli’s creations become complex and expressive mosaics of color and line, created with inks on paper, or on canvas in egg tempera mixed by hand from natural mineral pigments and essential oils. A self-taught artist from an early age, Lonli carries an appreciation for the mysterious origins of creation and living energies of nature into her present works, bringing a mythic symbolism and deeply philosophic meaning to her art. Through her globally inspired works one discovers the ancient knowledge and wisdom of the teachings of peoples long lost to history as well as the permanence of the values of our shared heritage, to be found in the roots of humanity.
A member of the Russian Union of Artists and International Federation of Artists, Lola Lonli has exhibited extensively across Russia, Latvia, and the Ukraine.
Artist Statement
From early childhood I felt that all things and nature have inner content. I watched and tried to understand, feeling that everything around me was alive and filled with mysterious energy. I was aware that this energy is fairly distributed everywhere, and I try to express this in my drawings. I love to work with egg tempera prepared according to an old Russian recipe modified by me, and I find it very expressive. My subjects come from ancient legends, with their grains of knowledge, missing links and eternal values. I am also influenced by music, and by archaic and mythological symbolism. Sometimes I concentrate so hard when working that I feel the energy contained in the environment around me is transferred, through me, to the canvas. I am inspired by love of nature, the world and people, and by a respect for the heritage and spiritual achievements of the multinational human community.
