Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Fine Art Photography
April 14 - May 5, 2009 Reception: Thursday April 16, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Taking as a point of departure the images found on rocks and stones, LEFT plays with our ideas of time, equating the artist's craft with the natural processes of erosion. Nature is a sculptor, according to LEFT, and sculptures can be found everywhere on earth. On these stones, the portrait of an ancient Greek philosopher, a native of Africa, even the form of an extraterrestrial being may appear. Thematically, the work raises the following question: where exactly does the meaning of a work of art belong, in the work itself or with the viewer?

One of LEFT's most provocative statements concerns the length of time a work of art takes to be created -the millions of years of natural erosion, or the instant of the photograph, which uses point of view and light to highlight the surface and shape in a unique way. Whatever the answer, LEFT's probing into the collaboration between nature and man brings forth beautiful photographic images.
LEFT currently resides in Athens, Greece.

Artist Statement

I would like my art to make people think. I believe that my work stands out in the art world and that my pictures inspire the creation of different thoughts to the spectator. For me, photography has always been my way to express my anxieties—especially in relation to time in the human dimension. This was the reason why most times I used Man as my point of focus.  However, when I started discovering stones, I realized that the most powerful model was nature itself. "Sculptures" that can be found everywhere on earth, the age of which may be a thousand or a million years old, are showing forms of today, of yesterday and of the unknown.
