Talented Iranian photographer Kimia Rahgozar creates images featuring graceful, emblematic forms of humanity. With a background in mathematics and engineering, her works employ a particular elegance to highlight the most human of moments: youth, parenthood, love, and moments of quiet reflection. Some of her most winning photographs employ a type of eclipse-like lighting that creates a stark outline of the figure against a void of shadow. These are grand images, often reaching over four feet. Outside the studio, Rahgozar photographs while traveling around Iran and abroad. Once again we find the artist’s appreciation of contrast but with the addition of vivid color and pattern. Vibrant fabrics or flowers in bloom stand out against the stucco facades of buildings. Other works, displaying her versatility, explore the rich cultural treasures and architecture of Persia with her characteristic appreciation of the people who call it home.

Rahgozar has exhibited frequently since the mid-1990s, in Iran and also Turkey, England, and recently the United States. She lives and works in Tehran.

Artist Statement

I believe that the ability to communicate is what brings us peace. True communication can only be achieved when we focus on the similarities and are able to see the differences. I am very fond of the human form, and therefore much of my interest lies in portraits. In my recent work I pay more attention to the human body in the most universal way, avoiding specifics such as sex and nationality, to show just the human being. The images I portray in my work are the things that are important to me, and might also be important to the viewer. The importance of life, communication and love, and seeing beauty where one may not think it exists.
