Press Release
The immense variety of textures which Kevin Smola is able to realize in his oil paintings is only matched by the eclecticism of his tools. With window wipers, drywall scrapers, putty knives and the occasional paintbrush, Smola creates amorphous shapes of unfathomable depth and a feathery softness that recalls the brushwork of late Monet. The colors define undulating patterns, which come together in what the artist calls “expressive compositions.”
Though based in the non-representational, the paintings clearly belong to this world. Smola’s treatment of light and penetrative space are meticulously observed, as a master would treat a still life. For him, every visual element is a kind of language. As he says, “my work provides a visual narrative of my life and its experiences… my goal is to connect with the viewer emotionally, bringing together unfamiliar people.” The mysteries contained in a Smola canvas are those of everyday life: the passage and loss of time, the opaque layers of experience, and the unknowable future.
Artist Statement
I believe to appreciate art one must appreciate the vision and will to create something beautiful from an innate spirit to inspire all who encounter it. Not only do I hope the viewer acknowledges the form and action of the painting, I want them to focus on their own reaction – my hope is that they will experience the overwhelming sense of being consumed by what they are viewing. Using scrapers and putty knives as well as a brush, I aim to make connections with virtual strangers by transforming the emotional documentary of my life into candid events on canvas. Using scale, texture, color and expressive compositions made with unconventional tools, my goal is to connect with the viewer emotionally. If they are moved, they have felt what I have felt during the painting's creation.
