Press Release

‘There is no escaping what excites us,’ remarks Jim Cobb, an artist whose oil paintings on canvas and board proclaim the monumentality of objects at work in quotidian space. Interested in light as the illusive substance all art serves to imitate, Cobb insists the object and its shadow are illusions that the artist must overcome to communicate the true core of intersubjective optical experience. His paintings span a range of styles, showing the artist’s versatility of expression as he moves effortlessly from almost abstract expressionist effervescent emotionality to Neo-impressionistic still life rendered with old world flare. Informed by his time spent in Asia and Europe respectively, Cobb’s expert application of paint to canvas inspires in its viewer a deep breath and a moment of tranquil contemplation.

Jim Cobb was born on a broom corn farm outside of Wewoka, Oklahoma during the Great American Depression of the 1930’s. He currently lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Artist Statement

I paint primarily in oils, although I have done work in other media. I have a great fondness for sculpture although time has only allowed for a few pieces so far. While I have painted in a representative style, I prefer more abstract work which respects and rarely loses the object. It is hard to find an artist who has nothing to say to me, so my list of inspirational painters is broad - paintings are indeed built upon the spots of color of so many. I view "style" as Pollack did - as a rat in the apartment that you cannot get rid of. I like viewers to linger in front of my work, learning that objects are seen and then evaporate as things around them crowd their space. Ultimately, the object and its shadow are illusions. Only the feeling is real.
