Press Release
Jana Vodesil-Baruffi blends astute realism with lush fantasy, creating images that are at once familiar and otherworldly. A painter who has always appreciated the organic shapes of nature and the human body, Vodesil-Baruffi makes visible the mystery that lies beneath the observable world. In her work, human breath merges with gusts of wind, trees grow out of bodies, and bodies turn to rivers. Colors embody energy and the movement that pulls the eye across each painting seems to be gesturing toward a wide open abyss of emotion.
Raised under Czechoslovakia’s communist regime, Vodesil-Baruffi began questioning society’s regulations at an early age. As she moved through childhood, into adulthood, and, ultimately, out of her home country, painting has been a way to question authority and to articulate the innate subconscious freedom essential to human life. Creative expression is something that each individual can control, and Vodesil-Baruffi controls her own expression with virtuosic agility, inviting viewers into her dreams. Vodesil-Baruffi has exhibited internationally. She currently resides in Perth, Australia.
Artist Statement
My artistic inclinations and technique have developed from perfecting my technical skills in drawing, to expressing my creativity in contemporary fantastic realism. The latter form has come at a time when I have found the ground beneath my feet as an artist as well as a person. My art draws on my emotional journey from past to present. For many years the ideas that come to life in my recent works lay in my subconscious as I struggled through the many painful trials. I now believe it was love that allowed my ideas to emerge from my subconscious and gave my creativity a concrete shape. I use my deep love of nature and the human body to create a world of fantasy. I am cautious about interpreting my art for the viewer, taking away the mystery and imagination from them. I want my viewers to feel and dream with me.
