Press Release

Scottish born artist James Buchanan Johnston has always possessed a passion and a burning curiosity for the visual arts. At the age of 15, Johnston left school to pursue a career in commercial art, working for many different firms in the display and exhibition industry as an illustrator and lettering artist.

Johnston later earned an honors degree from the Glasgow School of Art in 1975. Over the last 20 years, his work has been seen in various group and solo exhibitions as well as in many private collections. Though the artist professes a lifelong love for painting, photography and filmmaking, Johnston’s body of work is primarily comprised of acrylic on canvas, board and paper. His collection, largely abstract, conveys a remarkable, almost childlike fascination with colors, shapes and textures. Yet these elements are used expertly to convey vivid stories and incite the viewer to feel the emotion and intensity that guide his composition of simple objects. Johnston has spent many years teaching and lecturing. He currently resides in France.
