Press Release
Creating deeply introspective mixed-media paintings that straddle the worlds of expressionist realism and the abstract, Chilean artist Ivanka Kovacevic explores the circumstances and emotional nuances of human figures in transit from one place to the next. She combines her two passions, taking photographs of humans in that state at airports and train stations, and then interpreting and re-contextualizing the images using oil, acrylic, mixed-media, and collage. What results are images where grounded figures are juxtaposed against seemingly endless vistas, turning our focus toward the subtext of being “lost in space” that underscores any transitory experience.
The most impressive aspect of Kovacevic’s work is the way she seamlessly blends her two-style approach. In her abstracted segments, planes of colors are rich and deeply layered, pulling the viewer further and further into their boundless depths, yet they are masterfully synchronized with the human forms that offset these vast spaces. Kovacevic’s paintings probe how we as humans situate ourselves in the unfamiliar and often curious modern context of continuous travel, where transitions must ultimately be embraced.
Artist Statement
In my work I am able to combine my two passions: painting and photography. I take as my starting point the photographic record of transit situations and places such as airport lounges, waiting rooms, train stations, buses and the subway. Then I reinterpret and re-contextualize these images by using different materials such as oils, acrylics, enamels, paper, etc. I combine various techniques to create an image featuring, and focusing on, human figures who are lost in space. These figures then merge with abstract planes of color, creating my own personal vision of an instance of transit and enabling me to share this with my audience.
