Improvisation and rhythm courses through the paintings of Argentine painter Ignacio Alperin Bruvera. Fascinated by jazz, he tailors his visual language to the inventive and spontaneous methods of musicians. In Alperin's paintings we find spectacular lines spiraling or ripping across the canvas, framed by vigorous colors applied in his characteristic, painterly brushwork. These solid, powerful forms are paired with thin, sinewy lines that seem to slink toward the edge of the composition. Alperin has constructed his own language to speak to audiences, as, divorced from overt representation, he crafts this brawny abstraction to spur our imaginations and quicken our hearts. Audiences may feel a sense of peering through everyday reality, into an ageless realization, a connection to all that surrounds us. This is because Alperin works less from a proven technique than from his own spirit, allowing the painting to develop on its own. “In a painting, resolution is vital,” he explains. “It gives meaning, substance and sense to what the artist proposes.”
Ignacio Alperin Bruvera lives and works in Buenos Aires.
Artist Statement
I am a deeply creative individual. Art expression, particularly in the form of painting, has always been an essential part of my nature. The many cultures that make up my heritage and my life experience are as important inspirations to me as the reflections of what I see against the canvas of my own soul. They allow my brushes to pour out vibrant colors, create order within parameters not obvious at first sight, and generate a sense of continuous movement and change. That feeling of universality is what pushes my work to new frontiers in a never-ending expansion into the unknown. It is what transforms the viewers, from being mere onlookers, into being explorers of the painted surface and from there, of their own reality. Engaging them this way gives me satisfaction and encouragement in my search for new visual paradigms.
