Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Spanish photographer Iglessias’ mysterious and surreal images result from intricate staging and lighting processes, not digital alterations. This lends his work an irrepressible power and sense of immediacy, which he sees as photography’s greatest strength. Iglessias conveys this feeling of burning urgency while pursuing a very poised and calm style of traditional nude photography, developed during his time working as a fashion photographer. This surprising combination of futuristic lighting effects and time-honored poses pushes his images in exciting new directions, creating an uncanny synthesis that seems alternately timeless and aggressively contemporary.

The lighting effects – created by shooting with especially long exposure times – produce an almost painterly result with long, looping streaks and swirls of intense color, which turn an otherwise calm and intimate scene into something spectacular. In certain pieces, Iglessias pushes this brush-like quality further, essentially using the lights to color in certain areas of his shots. Cast in such dazzling neon hues, his nudes become otherworldly creatures.

Artist Statement

My work doesn’t involve any retouching whatsoever. What you see is what was portrayed at the time of releasing the shutter. I like working in digital photography for its sense of immediacy and dynamic feel, which helps create a meditative feel when I am shooting the pictures. While I am drawn to the physicality of each subject, I find that subconsciously I also portray signs given to us by the universe, highlighting its sense of mysticism. I immerse myself in my surroundings, letting instinct guide me. When I revisit the pictures I have taken, looking for the hidden messages and the thread which links them... this process brings surprising results, unimaginable prior to taking the pictures... While the pictures portray beauty, sometimes in its subtlest form, they also represent my deepest fears as though reflected in a large holographic mirror representing the duality present in our lives.
