Press Release
Hye-Kyoung Kim’s sensual abstracted depictions of flowers serve as an artistic expression of the artist’s own desire to unite with nature. The works, which intentionally recall the female anatomy, are not only erotic in their subtext but intend to explore the multiple facets of female existence. While on one hand they explore the roots of basic human desires, on the other they explore the capacity for nurturing human life. Her works reveal a deep respect not only for feminine beauty, but the awe-inspiring life-bearing abilities of women. By representing the ideals of motherhood in the forms of her watercolor flowers, she brings life and renewed beauty to an oft-ignored subject.
A native of Seoul, Korea, Hye-Kyoung Kim has been profoundly influenced by the varying journeys of all women throughout her artistic career. She is a recent recipient of the Grand Prize in the Korea Eroticism Arts Competition.
Artist Statement
Flower are plants' organs of generation. Furthermore, flowers symbolize the emotions of human life, and bring joy with their luster and vitality. Working with flowers helps me to unite with the beauty of nature, and to use this to evolve a unique form of artistic expression. I use techniques of magnified expression, a unique coloring composition, and controlled thickness of Gouche. The texture and simplicity of the petals is thus maintained. I try to avoid allusions to eroticism, because what I am really interested in is the root of the desires beneath it. Flowers symbolize the female form and its amazing ability to create life.
