Hanna Jach

Elements of Abstraction
March 30 - April 19, 2012 Reception: Thursday April 5, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

An expressive sense of renewal is infused into each of Hanna Jach’s abstract creations, bringing to light a meditative rebirth of spirit within the contrasts of contemporary consumerism. Through her art Jach gives value to the refuse of modern society as she includes cardboard, cartons, and packing material in her works, joining the distant realms of the emotional and the material in an artistic statement on sustainability. The artist immerses herself deeply in the emotional nature of her rich, atmospheric pigments, allowing each piece to develop organically from the cues given by her choice of color and medium. Moving freely between figurative and non-figurative abstraction, these works are created with a wide range of mediums including oil paints and pastels on canvas and board paired with elements of mixed media.

Over the past twenty-five years Hanna Jach’s fine art paintings and illustrations have received widespread exposure in Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain, and her native Germany, including publication as postcards and in several books.

Artist Statement

Basically, I start from the relationship between materials and artistic creative dynamism, based on my selection of colors. The form develops procedurally from the color and the material. The three-dimensional nature of the cardboard boxes of my recent work has brought in a new element, generated by the slight, fragile materials and the way they impact on my idea to invert the subject-object relationship, giving a new determination of space, bringing also a new sense to goods and their transformation into artwork. Our inner human realm is coming out as steles and memorials, while the goods are transported around the world - outside becomes inside. In addition, I turn the ‘garbage’ of a merchandise-oriented society into something of social value, through a comment on sustainability. In a globalized age of postmodernism, my work represents a chance to contrast the fast motion of multimedia with the moment of meditation in art.
