As an actress, storyteller, and visual artist, Hally McGehean’s creative energy is a veritable force of nature. McGehean has developed an elegant, mixed media method to convey her deeply personal narratives that she has dubbed “belles lettres”. Consisting of colorful still shots and typography, McGehean laminates stunning images from her photography and binds them together for installation to present a dramatic storyline. Exhibiting frequently, her artwork has been featured in a variety of major publications and collected by celebrities, intellectuals, and politicians. McGehean divides her time between Norwalk, Connecticut and New York City.

Artist Statement

I make things that talk to people for me, often to people who won't or can't listen. People I love. People who have hurt me. People who are dead. People I miss. I like to organize inarticulately expressed feelings and make them visual and concise and resonant. I discovered the term 'belles lettres', more often referring to essays, and filched it for its apt description of the stories I make. Despite its awkwardness on the American tongue, belles lettres are defined as literature that is regarded as fine art. I make picture books, laminate their pages, attach the pages with plastic cable ties, and hang them on walls; the name fits.
