Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
November 2 - November 23, 2011 Reception: Thursday November 3, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

The Brooklyn-born, Long Island-based artist H. Scott Cushing finds images in the sky. Though trained as a photographer, snapping a shot is only the first step in his unique, multidisciplinary process, which also incorporates graphic arts and digital manipulation. He starts by taking spectacular photographs of clouds, either at sunset, on crisp, clear blue days or under menacing, overcast skies. He then applies various mirroring effects that turn those stunning cloudscapes into Rorschach-like abstract patterns within which Cushing sometimes embeds digital, drawing-like human figures. These additional features disrupt the patterns of repetition, injecting surreal and surprising elements into the creation. He cites the importance of existentialism in his work, which comes across with superb visual force both in the fragile outlines of those human figures, but also in the quasi-Biblical immensity of the skies he shoots and refracts.

H. Scott Cushing’s combinations of celestial and human images elicit innumerable emotional impressions, from melancholy and self-reflection to rapturous optimism.

Artist Statement

I believe I have a unique view of the world and try to portray that through my photography. I believe that in some way, though subtle, I tell the story of my life and times through my art. At times peaceful and serene, at others frenetic and disordered, my life has brought me many places and I have met many interesting people, all of whom have influenced the eyes through which I view the world and create my work. The solitude of the beach, the Rorschach appearance of the clouds and the vibrant colors of fall represent some of the stories and sensations I experience and draw upon for inspiration. My abstracts are an area in which I use vibrant color and repetition as the major design element. Through the digital process my images are created with ultimate flexibility and intense manipulation.
