Gabriel Leitner

Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
April 16 - May 7, 2010 Reception: Thursday April 22, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Israeli photographer Gabriel Leitner creates rousing images through a discerning scientific eye. His photographs compel us to question our conventional view of the world while remaining minimalist, abstract, and tightly cropped. Silky layering and subtle colors frequently play major roles in the emotional qualities of the work. Travel and exposure to a variety of cultures has acted as a wellspring of inspiration for him. An array of subjects captivates his creative life as Leitner explores the qualities of both robust forms and sensual lines. He plays with perspective and reflections, allowing our eyes to seek out hidden corridors and mystic horizons.

Leitner speaks through powerful yet elemental forms in order to say the most to his audience while inviting the viewer’s interpretation. "For me one precise word, one direct line at the right time in the right place has more significance than a whole loaded canvas or a page full of words." In addition to his highly respected position as an international scientist, he has a burgeoning career as a photographer, with membership in two photography groups and exhibitions in Israel and New York.

Artist Statement

My art is a science. For years, I have been searching to find a way to sharpen my queries, without expecting to find answers. Answers are only temporary. Although science seems highly complex, in my view in order to function it has to be simple. My outlook on photography is similar to science. Each frame has to be minimal and in balance. Each frame needs to raise different questions for each viewer and be stimulating enough that the viewer wants to search inside it over and over again. For me, color masks the essence, whereas black and white, or monochrome, presents the maximum stimulation to the viewer, challenging him/her to find relevance and meaning. My goal is to enable the viewer to understand the meaning of each picture through simple lines.
