Gaëtan Trottier

Beyond Borders: Exhibition of Fine Art From Canada
October 5 - October 26, 2010 Reception: Thursday October 7, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

As varied and ever-changing as the natural world, Gaëtan Trottier’s molded metal sculptures retain the qualities of their molten birth, like cooled fragments of lava remaining after an explosive eruption. Cast in bronze and burnished with a subtly aged patina, Trottier creates his freeform abstractions and figurative studies purely by instinct and intuition, with a spontaneous and gestural motion. Trottier draws his inspiration from the existentialism and liberation of the Refus global’s Automatists and the subconscious vision of the surrealist movement. His work could be described as 'action sculpture,' after the 'action painting' movement in New York which influenced his artistic development. The process of creation is vital to his works as he submits to the freedom of his method, allowing the form to develop impulsively, unencumbered by preconceived thought or ideas.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Trottier developed his skills while studying sculpture in Florence and Pietra Santa, Italy. Trottier’s works have received extensive recognition and exposure throughout Paris and Montreal, where he is a featured artist of the Montreal Bronze Museum.

Artist Statement

I was influenced by the existentialists and drawn to the views and principles of the Refus global and the Automatists. I am attracted by the liberation of the subconscious that brings surrealism, the releasing of the mind. My natural preference for baroque is encouraged by the principal art movements of my time: Abstract Expressionism, action painting, lyrical abstraction. These are all styles that appeal to me and are of great influence throughout my artistic process. My work is gestural, instinctive, fed by the involuntary act of form creation. I work with fervor, inspired by anguish and brute force that brings out the angst from my inner reality.
