Press Release
Part monster, part man, the characters depicted by the Brazilian/Italian artist Fabrizio Andriani demand immediate and total attention. With a careful and precise hand, Andriani creates figures that appear almost superhuman, hero and villain, expressing and amplifying the emotions experienced and encountered by man on a daily basis. Inspired by Mexican mural art and facets of popular culture such as comic books, movies and video games, Andriani experiments with color, technique and media—including acrylic paint, marker on canvas, and felt-tip pen on paper. His works are caricatures that intentionally exaggerate—sometimes to grotesque dimensions—raw human emotion, conveying through muscular lines, deep shadows, soulful eyes, the inner thoughts of the depicted. Through their meaningful facial expressions, Andriani’s strong characters highlight the marvelous and mysterious nature of life.
An artist, illustrator, and graphic designer, Andriani currently lives and practices in Curitiba, Brazil, where he teaches art and coordinates social/cultural projects and exhibitions.
Artist Statement
My artistic leanings and desires began in early childhood. My first influences were Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel and Francisco Goya, in books at home. I was always attracted by the mysticism of these great artists. And of course, I loved the monstrous figures that populated their dark worlds. When I moved to Italy I came into contact with the works of artists like Andrea Pazienza e Tanino Liberatore, who also influenced me. After studying at the Liceo Artistico de Pescara, I started painting with acrylic at the di Belle Arti di Genova. I became fascinated by the power of colors and the mix between traditional painting and more contemporary influences. The color contrasts in my works became stronger and I started using metallic, fluorescent and phosphorescent colors. Now I paint with felt-tip pen. This allows me to approach in my art the colors and lights which mark contemporary life and vision.
