Ember Fairbairn-Ramsay

Pathway to Abstraction
November 2 - November 23, 2011 Reception: Thursday November 3, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Meditative and insightful, Ember Fairbairn-Ramsay has crafted a body of work that treasures the self amongst the boundless glories of our world. Her palette is at once subtle and fiery, modulating hues with layer after layer of paint that is allowed to drip and take on a life of its own. This painterly approach adds an ethereal and organic quality to each piece. Fairbairn-Ramsay seeks to promote transpersonal exploration with her art. Space and openness is fundamental to the composition, allowing the audience to wander with both their eyes and spirits. The overarching theme focuses on nature, although certain works nod toward the teachings of Taoism and Buddhism while others speak to the timeless continuity of life. “Creating art for me is communion with creation,” she explains. “It is a meditation where one ‘loses’ self and merges into all that is and all that is yet to be.”

Since 2000, Ember Fairbairn-Ramsay has exhibited frequently throughout her native Australia, and she has recently entered the dynamic art scene of New York.

Artist Statement

Creating art for me is communion with creation, it is a contemplative meditation where one “loses” the self and merges into all that is and all that is yet to be. To a large degree it is the process and the form which shapes the content of the work, employing colour, mark-making, symbol and shape through oil paint and texture via the encaustic process. Sometimes the work happens of its own accord as if it is already there and I am merely transposing from thin air, other times a piece might sit, sometimes for months or a year, and gestate, waiting patiently for the next working. There are many layers to the works. My work is also about the relationship with and within nature as a being in the world of form, influenced by traditional Chinese medicine and philosophy.
