Press Release
Deva Lei’s Zen-influenced paintings belong on the extralinguistic border of the gloriously otherworldy. Lei’s quicksilver image making is founded on the spiritual principles of universal synchronicity and conscious deliberate action, a combination which makes these playful abstractions in acrylic or oil on canvas spring to life. Brilliant shards of opaque coloration fold and release into swiveling, spontaneous ribbons. Wedded to the practice of Zen meditation and particularly the meditative therapy Osho Mystic Rose, Lei’s interdisciplinary artistic creation stems from a ‘surrender to the infinite flow of cosmic creativity.’ Like the lyricism and pulse of vocal composition, another source of Lei’s inspiration, the works float at the unbound limits of human perception. Possessing both the immersive quality of music and the lure of esoteric delights, these free-flowing acts of creation evoke the harmony of rest, pleasure, love and sensuality.
Deva Lei was born in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine (former USSR). The self-taught artist currently lives and works in Kiev, Ukraine.
Artist Statement
My creativity comes from the state of meditation, when I’m boundless and feel synchronicity with the whole Universe. I just let existence flow through me, doing anything that wants to be done at that moment. I call it Spontaneous Creativity, because it appears from moment to moment, always new, fresh, unpredictable. I feel connection with the power which creates clouds in the sky, waves in the ocean, stars in space… It is born from the state of no-mind: no ideas, no patterns, no rules. Just experiment, movement, dance, letting go. I want to express this freedom which comes from surrendering to the infinite flow of cosmic creativity, to be honest, sensitive, playful, innocent, daring. My works carry this quality of energy – willing to live, grow, expand, express, inspire, wake up.
