Press Release
Inspired by the intensity of the Australian landscape, the vibrancy of its sunsets and otherworldly moonscapes, Derryn Tal brings to life all the drama and majesty of the changing natural elements in her paintings. Tal approaches her abstractions with no preconceived ideas, allowing herself to interact freely with the materials. Her paintings become celebrations of the pure color and richness of her pigments, playful explorations of surface and mark. Working in mixed media and paint, she combines various mediums to create rivulets and crevices on her highly textured surfaces. Occasionally the canvas itself becomes an active element of the art, as in her jacket compositions.
Throughout her career Tal has refused to limit herself to a single genre, also working in photography, illustration, sculpture and rug design. Born in South Africa and now living in Australia, Tal’s works have received international exposure in recent years, including being honored with the Italian Premio Ercole D’Este award in 2009.
Artist Statement
I am an Australian artist who specialises in mixed media abstract paintings on canvas. My work takes the viewer on a mystical voyage, from darkness into light, through cracks & crannies and beguiling gullies, into space and beyond. My passions are expressed through saturated shades of blood-reds, crater-like browns and blacks, shades of blue, and luminous whites. My atypical mixture of bitumen, acrylic and oil glazes produces rivulets and crevices on the canvas. I approach each canvas free from predetermined composition. I allow my energetic passion and the interaction of the media to dictate the direction and results of my artworks. I draw inspiration from the dramatic Australian landscapes, its rich and intense sunsets and mysterious moonscapes. I hope that the viewer's experience changes each time they engage with my paintings, as there is so much to discover, from minute detail to the full impact of the artwork.
