The color and vitality of the natural world that is found in Debra Kayata’s works remains steadfast even as her flowers and botanical studies are twisted and altered through computer manipulation. In her “Intense Preservation” series of archival digital pigment prints Kayata focuses on the obsessive drive, so prevalent in modern culture and media, to preserve youth and beauty by any means possible. As her blossoms degrade and metamorphose they become more artificial than real, shimmering with a plasticity which is at once exaggerated and intimate as it draws the viewer into the inner perspectives of the plant. A passionate gardener, Kayata’s lush outdoor environment provides a wealth of inspiration and imagery which she uses as a foundation for her modern and surreal photographs.
Kayata studied Fine Art and Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York. After finding her artistic voice through digital photography, Kayata continued her studies at the International Center of Photography and has since received international recognition for her works.
