Press Release

Clive Rowe’s spectacular abstractions are magnetic works that demand your attention. A life-long photographer, Rowe's colorful images display an artist affectionately experimenting with exciting new media by taking original photographs and manipulating them on a computer. The results are commanding and otherworldly. Soft and subtle or hard and dynamic, Rowe’s abstract compositions are like no other artistic creation. There is a geometric sensibility underneath the Technicolor sheen and electronic polish. Many images are framed by powerful sweeping “brushstrokes” that give way to a sense of endless depth, while other forms are presented in an empirical void.

Each work presents a new experience, as if Rowe is constantly reinventing himself. The forms seem to take shape from pure energy; the variety of color and texture is truly astounding. “The energy comes from a desire to challenge the conventional and obvious,” he explains, “to overturn the banal and to enliven the ordinary.” Although his work remains entirely abstract, Rowe is communicating with us on an individual level. The message is yours to discover.

Artist Statement

While I admire beautiful photographs and the technical skills that go into their production, I have long felt that in pursuing photography as an art form, a rethink is necessary. The quest for originality in conventional photography becomes ever more difficult. I think one should bear in mind that photography began in the mysterious world of the alchemist. Some ideas are best expressed through atmospheric forms, shapes and colours. These days there are new opportunities with the computer and I try to use these to the full in creating my abstract images, to engage the viewer in a new way of thinking, for many ideas are best seen as impressions. I like the images to speak for themselves, leaving interpretation open to the viewer even though theirs may differ from my own.
