Great art is magnetic to our attention, appealing to our innate aesthetic sensibilities, drawing us into a visual experience. A contemporary artist whose art is reflective of this standard is Christiane Lohrig, who crafts oversized mixed-media works that are truly stunning to behold. Each painting is crafted in stages, beginning with acrylic paint and later employing an assortment of unusual media such as paper rags, sand, collagen, and timeworn steel. Layer after layer is applied, working the surface until finally stencils or fine lines are sprayed or etched into the damp paint. Her imagery exudes an earthy elegance, reliant upon the powerful movement of outsized shapes and the patterns, numbers, and letters peeking from the edges. "With the multifarious mix of material, the nearly sculptural character and all the secret hints, the paintings take viewers on an enthralling voyage of discovery into the world of the unconscious and the emotions," she states.
Christiane Lohrig has exhibited in Germany, Luxembourg, and the United States. She resides in Saarbrücken, Germany.
Artist Statement
My paintings are counted as experimental art, color-focused and largely abstract. The origins of my paintings are my experiences, adventures and memories, often related to nature and expressed in my own individual pictorial language. My creative process is protracted and very complex, because the mostly large-sized paintings on canvas or wood are developed in many different stages. Step by step, I apply acrylic, sand, collagen, paper rags or rusty steel with brushes or spatulas, rollers, sponges and even my hands. Later I use spray paint and stencils, followed by gentle repainting. Characters and figures are carved into the wet color or applied with ink to appear out of the depths of the pictorial ground. The mix of materials, sculptural character and secret hints included in the images mean that the paintings take viewers on an enthralling voyage of discovery into the world of the unconscious and the emotions.
