Press Release
The instinctual paintings of Célia Bai Lambert communicate strong emotion through dynamic feminine figurative gestures and the blending of pale and bold colours. Using a variety of media, the better to express herself, Lambert uses a contrast of daring rich colours that accentuate energetic human forms. During her artistic education, Lambert discovered that writing can add to the development of a powerful form of expression and as a result she incorporates text into some of her works. Lambert states that her process is spontaneous and emotional. Always independent, following only what she knows to be right for her unique form of expression, Lambert works instinctively, without rules. The element of colour is Lambert’s strongest expression and most faithful reflection of the emotions and feelings she wishes to communicate. Painting has become Lambert’s arena to express deeply rooted feelings of rage and frustration connected to her past experiences of leaving her homeland.
Célia Bai Lambert studied Art Deco for three years at Ifage in Geneva and lives and works in Switzerland.
Artist Statement
The beginnings of my paintings were very spontaneous, without research, only focusing on colour and texture - it was very emotional and less “reasonable”. This was powerful though, because leaving the rules I had never been comfortable with behind meant that I could create something really new, and begin to fulfill my potential. This journey is reflected in my work. I never know quite what is going to happen when I begin painting - it depends on my state of mind, the emotions I want to express at the time. I mix media and styles, even use my hands to paint - whatever seems right at the time.
