Catherine Gaillard Perez

The French Perspective: Contemporary Art from France
June 30 - July 21, 2011 Reception: Thursday July 7, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

In oil paintings rich in color, texture and form, French artist Catherine Gaillard Perez draws inspiration from the natural and the human world, developing vibrant visions full of movement that are at times frenzied yet always defined by a harmonious sense of rhythm. As she explains, “The strong sensation of being part of the universe and belonging to an earthly and celestial harmony urges me to express my vision of the world.” For Gaillard Perez, painting is truly seeing the world around her and then expressing what she sees and feels. Whether her subject is landscape, portrait, self-portrait or still life, she transforms her perceptions and impressions into extraordinary pieces of art.

Gaillard Perez’s paintings combine rich colors with a masterful use of light and shadow in order to create works of pure expressionism. Her depth of form yields dynamic images that have many stories to tell. What results are paintings that convey joy and happiness alongside anger and sadness, revealing the complexity of emotions that lies at the core of all human experience.

Artist Statement

As far as I remember, I have always drawn. It was my favorite form of expression.  I feel that life is an amazing adventure with an infinite number of things to see, feel, share… I translate this vision of the world through my art, with no intellectualization, using dynamic brushstrokes and bright colors. I came to this style after studying art at the Ecole Supérieures des Arts Appliqués in Paris, and travelling around the world. I also developed my painting skills at the Académie de Port Royal with Jean-Maxime Relange, and was awarded the Grand Prix de Peinture. Despite my technical experience, I find my main inspiration in nature and human beings – the changing atmosphere of the seasons, portraits and self-portraits. My favorite medium is oil, but for big outdoor works I opt for acrylic. These choices help me express the immediacy and richness of what I see around me.
