Press Release
Inspired by musicals and theatre, artist Carol Shumas's paintings display a flair for storytelling. Her colorful paintings are filled with lively characters, each individualized in their role and telling a personal story. Composing each painting as if it were a performance on stage, each canvas presents a vibrant tableau of a sweet and festive village life. This creative perspective is achieved as the characters seem to face their "audience," the background representing the set, complete with atmospheric detail. Shumas's colorful work is reminiscent in concept to the work of Edvard Munch, who although is most famous for his work "The Scream" painted many portraits of everyday life in his small, German town.
Possessing a strong narrative quality and richness usually inherent in fairy-tale illustrations, Shumas takes the viewer on a visual feast of the charms of life. Carol Shumas has shown her work throughout Canada and New York. She currently lives and works in West Vancouver, Canada.
