Carlos Cabán

Masters of the Imagination: The Latin American Fine Art Exhibition
September 10 - October 1, 2010 Reception: Thursday September 16, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

The exquisitely rendered oil paintings of Carlos Cabán emerge from a rich confluence of cultural, spiritual and artistic traditions. He portrays human figures with the exacting precision of traditional portraiture, while his landscapes use the scenery of Surrealism to portray myths that borrow from various Native American cultures. Amazingly, he manages to re-imagine these centuries-old legends using a startlingly contemporary, even post-modern set of aesthetic approaches. Cabán plays with this odd meeting of periods, cultures and styles, occasionally introducing jarring modern details like compact discs into otherwise mystic canvases.

Therein lies the greatest strength of Cabán’s work: its ability to portray ancient ideas and stories with a strikingly contemporary lexicon, translating distant notions into tangible and immediate terms. His paints are applied with great attention to detail, relishing especially in brilliant effects of light and texture. Most of his canvases are dominated by magical blues and earthy greens, which contribute to the sense that we are witnessing primeval legends as they’ve never been told before.

Artist Statement

I have had a very rich life as an artist. Wherever I have gone or lived, my art has enriched my life experience. My work has been shared in many ways, and for me the culmination of a piece is always seeing it resonate with a viewer. As I get older, my work increasingly explores spirituality, myths and other states of consciousness. The themes intertwine with my desire to return to basics: light and color, the application of the paint, primitive art and culture, mother goddess culture, symbols and geometry, abstractions and dreams, back to my subconscious and my childhood where everything connects again. I think that my work really goes back to the ancient idea that art is sacred and mysterious. In an intellectualized art world, I am reaching out to the past where art was the gateway into mysterious worlds.
