Carl Ellis

Carl Ellis’ photographs delve into intimate textures, in particular those to be found in the natural world. His images capture those details of our surroundings that often go unnoticed by the common eye. Inspired by unusual patterns, and the subtle details of our everyday environment, Ellis' work expresses bold colors, strong recurring patterns, and palpable textured surfaces. His cropped compositions draw the viewer in and invite the imagination to explore each image. Working exclusively and with great creativity in color, Ellis' method involves the use of filtered lenses, natural lighting, and also extensive experimentation, which remains a cornerstone of his artistic process. The end result is a world within itself, a self-contained universe that reveals its unique story through a language of vivid tones and textured landscapes.

Carl Ellis was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and earned his BFA in photography, at Edinboro University in 1991. He moved to New York City in 1992.
