CHAREST’s still life paintings of pears, apples, cherries, and plums delve well beyond these familiar forms to convey a deep sensuality and expressionism. Mysterious black backdrops create a sense of allure and mystery against which the bright colors of his fruits are set. This dramatic tone is underscored by unconventional textures and compositions that are dynamic and edgy. One can feel the weightiness of the fruit and the meaningfulness within that extends well beyond the subject being depicted.
What makes CHAREST’s work so compelling is the emotionality contained in his paintings, the sense that what is captured on the canvas is so much more than fruit. Interestingly, he doesn’t paint from real life models, borrowing the figurative authenticity of the forms but not the realism. In his work, “they provide a pretext to speak of men and women, neighbors, strangers, and even intruders.” Through this infusion of meaning into mundane objects, CHAREST works his magic and transforms simple forms into strong, complex evocations.
Artist Statement
I paint simple things - pears, apples, cherries, plums - but with strong, complex evocations. I do not seek to merely reproduce my subjects. I want to create a mood, to express a feeling, to convey sensuality and to surprise. My imagination draws yours into a certain ambiguity: Can those really be fruit? The power of suggestion in my work is undeniable. My search for unconventional textures finds expression in my personal vision of still life. The purity of composition and unusual formats further enhance my ability to breathe more life into my subjects than nature has herself.
