CATO

Landscapes of the Mind
May 18 - June 7, 2012 Reception: Thursday May 24, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

Inspired by the inimitable experiences of his dreams, American mixed-media artist CATO layers meaning and materials into eloquently harmonious compositions. Through these distinctively unique works, he is able to spark a rare but authentic personal connection with each one of his viewers. An artist since childhood, CATO first realized the thrilling rush of such a universal, paradoxically personal bond with a viewer by blending artistic and musical mediums in a kaleidoscopic hybrid of beauty. Derivative of collage, the work uses a rich nuance of opulent color and oscillating layers of texture. The result is a series of creations that reach the viewer on an exquisitely poignant human level. Artifacts of popular culture welcome us, while abstract, vivacious color lulls our eyes into a trance-like wonder. “I prefer to work in the abstract, because that is how each of us absorbs all the outside information coming at us and tries to make sense of it and let it play in our minds,” he explains.

CATO lives in New York.

Artist Statement

I have been painting for many years, having established a size and style in the ‘80s. In my work, I lean towards combining paint and mixed media with the technique of collage. My choice of color palette ranges from shades of red, yellow, green, black and gold to earth tones. I’ve also discovered that certain found objects spark my imagination and become part of the process of creation. All of these different elements come together to express the message I wish to convey to the viewer – a message that can range from politics to tropical island themes, the rock’n’roll of the 1960s, dream imagery, mythology, movie characters and humorous observations. I prefer to work in the abstract, because it is here that each of us absorbs the outside information that comes to us and tries to make sense of it, playing it over in our minds in a free and expressive manner.
