Blazo (Briggitte Lazo) is an intensely active painter - drizzling, splattering and daubing oil paint onto canvas. Her brushstrokes become the vehicle for her moods, billowing like smoke or cascading like a waterfall. With Latin and Caribbean roots, Blazo’s interests are energetic, worldly and varied. Her body of work features contemplative images of self-discovery, serene still-lifes, abstract expressionism and stunning scenes from the natural world. Particularly wonderful are her series of female figures, which are presented in a number of contexts – as musicians, mothers, thinkers and sensual beings. Some are depicted as busts with voluminous swaths of brightly colored hair. The hair itself is the main character in these works, conveying different moods, from joy and excitement to peaceful introspection. Blazo’s figures are often reminiscent of indigenous African sculpture, as she organizes features into elegant geometric shapes. Other paintings become wild abstract expressionist pieces. With these she explores some of the most powerful and mystical facets of nature, such as volcanoes or auroras, as sources of artistic inspiration.
Blazo lives in Weston, Florida.
